Rob Joannides joined HKA in 2021. We sat down to talk about his background and what he loves about infrastructure.

What is your role at HKA?

I am a Consultant in the Strategy, Development and Optimisation team.

As a Consultant, I deliver strategic planning advice to public sector clients on capital projects. My primary responsibilities include leading smaller parcels of work, engaging with stakeholders, drafting project deliverables and managing the client relationship through routine reporting. On larger projects, I coordinate inputs across multi-disciplinary project teams, prepare briefing packs, draft reports and business cases seeking both asset and non-asset solutions.

What is your academic and business background?

I have a Bachelor of Business, with majors in Finance and Marketing.

I chose a Business degree because of its broad application, and I majored in finance to strengthen my quantitative skillset. I began working in marketing as it provided a good grounding for selling, whether you’re selling yourself,  products or services.

I had two internships during university, which helped strengthen my business acumen. One was with an online menswear retailer, the other with a private retail consultancy. This was my first taste of strategy and advisory work which I really enjoyed.

I learned how to identify a business’s problem, synthesise information and apply data and research to propose a solution. Importantly, I learned how to prepare presentations, interact with clients and colleagues and perform general administrative tasks that I still use in my day-to-day work.

What made you choose this career path?

My internships gave me a feel for consulting, and the breadth of opportunities, industries, and projects you can gain exposure to.

After advising in the retail sector, I wanted to gain exposure in a new industry that delivered meaningful projects for communities. I was also keen to gain a greater level of responsibility on engagements such as planning, change management, and commercial transactions with infrastructure at the core.

What sparked your interest in infrastructure?

I’m not sure when it started, but I was always intrigued by how cities were built and the positive impact this has on creating cohesive communities. Working in an infrastructure advisory business allowed me to better understand public planning of infrastructure services and how investment decisions progress through government.

What do you love about what you do?

I love that I get to work with interesting people from diverse backgrounds across the public and private sectors. Colleagues and clients I work with are well rounded in their knowledge and can easily adapt to any problem. I’m continually discovering more efficient ways of working, innovative project management methodologies, and learning new tools and systems to enhance our services.

Like most of us, you have other roles beyond your role at HKA; tell me more about them.

I’m a full-time uncle to almost two kids, a part-time basketball referee, furniture removalist, and endorphin addict.

What is something about you that might surprise people?

I volunteered and studied Spanish in Peru when I was 18. That was the first of six months travelling around South America. I was also fortunate enough to watch five games at the FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.
