Fighting Disease

About the Cause

We understand one of the principle factors of achieving wellbeing is living free of chronic or serious disease, or, where this isn’t possible, reducing the symptoms to allow people to lead a fulfilling life.

This is why, throughout the world, HKA selects charities that work to offer physical and emotional support for people and their families living with disease, as well as those striving to eradicate them entirely.

Here is a selection of charities we have supported that help fight disease.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer Research UK fund scientists, doctors and nurses to help beat cancer sooner. They also provide cancer information to the public.

What we did

HKA’s European team made a concerted effort throughout the month of June (2021) to be more active and clock up the kilometres to raise money for this important charity. With an activity converter which converted more obscure sports and activities into kilometres, the team managed to cover 7,441 kilometres, or the distance from the UK to the Cayman Islands. With a 25 pence per kilometre conversion rate and a number of individual contributions, this resulted in a HKA donation of just over £2,000.

Actions for Pulmonary Fibrosis

Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis is a patient-driven charity. They are a growing community of patients, families, researchers and healthcare professionals striving to find a cure for pulmonary fibrosis so that everyone affected by the disease has a better future. Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis supports patients and families and raise awareness of pulmonary fibrosis through campaigning, fundraising and education. They also fund research to improve quality of life for people living with pulmonary fibrosis and to find a cure.

What we did

In memory of our dear friend and work colleague, Roddy Wilkie (1957-2020), HKA donated to Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis. This charity was important to Roddy as he lived with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD), a form of pulmonary fibrosis.

“I just wanted to get in touch as I can see that HKA made an incredibly kind donation via our website in memory of your colleague Roddy Wilkie. Thank you so much to everyone at HKA for supporting our work with this donation. It really will go a long way in helping us continue to provide our vital services.” Natalie Martin, Community and Corporate Fundraiser, Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis

Worldwide Cancer Research

Cancer is a global problem, so Worldwide Cancer Research searches worldwide for cures. One person dies from cancer every four seconds around the world. Their small team of less than 50 people is dedicated to saving more lives, and that's why they support the brightest research minds throughout the world.

What we did

In honour of World Cancer Day 2021, we made a donation to Worldwide Cancer Research. We also encouraged our colleagues to take part in the World Cancer Day 21 Days of Impact Challenge, and sent a communication inviting colleagues to find out how they can help look after themselves to prevent cancer.

Brain Tumour Research UK

Brain tumours are indiscriminate; they can affect anyone at any age. What’s more, they kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Brain Tumour Research is determined to change this.

What we did

Our Teesside office took part in Wear a Hat Day to raise money for Brain Tumour Research!
