Improving mental health

About the Cause

We understand the devastating toll mental health issues can put on those who suffer and their loved ones. This is why we are passionate about supporting causes that help people live better and more fulfilling lives by improving mental health.

In some ways, we are fortunate to now live in a world in which mental health issues can be openly discussed among family, friends and in our workplaces. But we know there is still a long way to go to dispel the stigma and misunderstandings surrounding mental health issues.

Here’s a selection of causes we’ve supported that help improve mental health.

R U OK? Day Australia

R U OK?'s vision is a world where we're all connected and are protected from suicide. Their mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.

What we did

Each year, colleagues in our Oceania region use R U OK? to bring the topic of mental health front of mind. We hold morning teas across our offices in Australia to remind colleagues of the value of this simple but powerful question.

In 2022, we welcomed Andre Kock, an R U OK? Day community ambassador to share his story. This provided us with a supportive, safe and open environment to share our own personal stories.

ReachOut's Laps for Life challenge

ReachOut helps support young people in Australia living with mental health difficulties and provides dedicated digital mental health services for people aged 14-25, giving guidance and information on how young can help themselves and their friends. The Laps for Life challenge helps raise money for ReachOut through a month-long swimming challenge.

What we did

Members of the Oceania team participated in the challenge and together they raised AU$5,210. This will help ReachOut achieve its mission of ensuring that all young people have the support they need to be happy and well.

Ayrshire Cancer Support

Ayrshire Cancer Support has operated in Ayrshire since 1982, providing emotional support and practical help to those affected by cancer. Their aim is to improve the quality of life of those living with cancer and ensure that help is readily available throughout Ayrshire for those who need it.

What we did

HKA was proud to be able to support the excellent work of Ayrshire Cancer Support through the donation of six laptops, which allowed vital counselling and bereavement sessions to continue during the lockdown measures of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Technical Director Euan Geddes and the European CSR Committee helped coordinate the donation on behalf of HKA to ensure Ayrshire Cancer Support counsellors could access the NHS Attend Anywhere / Near Me technology as their previous computers did not have built-in cameras.

Sandra McCall, Chief Executive of the charity said, “Thank you very much for the kind donation of six laptops from HKA to Ayrshire Cancer Support to assist us to deliver online cancer and bereavement counselling sessions during the current pandemic.

“Prior to the lockdown our counselling sessions took place face-to-face in our support centres and we had replaced these with telephone counselling while our staff are working from home. The laptops will allow us to use the NHS Attend Anywhere / Near Me technology to give our clients the option of using this video platform, which will be of great benefit to many.”

Euan said, “A heartfelt thanks to [the HKA team] for your efforts in making this happen – it is a charity and a cause which is close to my heart so I am enormously grateful.”
