HKA recognises that it can have an impact on the environment, both directly from our operations and indirectly through our services. We seek to manage our environmental impacts, risks and opportunities to reduce the cost of doing business and to protect and enhance the environment in which we operate. In keeping with HKA’s overall vision of making the best possible outcome a reality, every time, we are committed to outcomes that create multi-faceted benefits for the environment, our clients and the community as a whole.
For over 25 years, through litigation, teamwork, and advocacy, DC Appleseed has helped make the District of Columbia a better place to live and work. The thousands of hours of pro bono time donated by our volunteer attorneys, business leaders, and community experts multiply the impact of our financial support many times over.
On 7 June, HKA sponsored the DC Appleseed Center for Law and Justice’s 2023 Seeding Change Luncheon which was held at DC Water’s HQ in Washington, DC.
Steven Stanton, Partner, Ryan Groves, Senior Associate Consultant, and Andrew Dillon, Director, attended the event to support organization’s award-winning work. The money donated will assist in supporting DC Appleseed’s current initiatives:
• Continuing the pace-setting effort of environmental cleanup of the Anacostia River
• Producing a landscape assessment and analysis of DC’s Workforce Development system
• Advocating for DC statehood and limiting federal intervention into local affairs
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world.
To recognise World Environment Day, we conducted an interview with Alex Lee, Principal. Alex leads the Environment & Climate Change technical division of our Forensic Technical Services. We spoke to him about the industry he works in, the environment and how we can be more sustainable in our own lives. Click here to read the full interview.
In addition, in alignment in the World Environment Day, ‘Solution to Plastic Pollution’, HKA donated to Ocean Cleanup, Ocean Blue Project, Plastic Free Seas and Tangaroa Blue to aid the fight against plastic pollution, aiming at a cleaner more sustainable future.
In 2022, UN Women celebrated International Women's Day with the theme of Changing Climates: Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.
To contribute to this conversation, Shamila Neelakandan, HKA Partner and Head of Operations Malaysia and Singapore, spoke with the head of policy and climate change for WWF Malaysia, Lakshmi Lavanya Rama Iyer, about the role of women and their contribution as leaders in the area of sustainable growth. Discussions also touched on gender balance, challenges faced and the future of sustainable growth.

The Canopy Project improves our shared environment by planting trees across the globe. Since 2010, EarthDay.org has planted tens of millions of trees with The Canopy Project, working worldwide to strengthen communities.
For two consecutive years, HKA recognised Earth Day by donating $1 for every global colleague to support the Canopy Project, to further support the global tree-planting effort.
World Land Trust (WLT) is an international conservation charity that protects the world’s most biologically significant and threatened habitats.
HKA has planted a tree for every colleague (850+) through the World Land Trust’s Plant a Tree program. The World Land Trust’s Plant a Tree campaign contributes to global reforestation efforts, restoring lost forests, repairing damaged ecosystems and mitigating climate changes.
The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation developing and scaling technologies to rid the oceans of plastic. They aim to clean up 90% of floating ocean plastic pollution.
In honour of World Environment Day 2022, HKA supported the Ocean Cleanup by making a donation that will help work towards a future where plastic no longer pollutes our oceans.
