Alan Borrowman is a Chartered Engineer with 50 years of industry experience. He has acted as a technical expert on 10 occasions.

Alan is an expert in chemical and process safety engineering, advising clients in contractual disputes involving the design or construction of chemical plants and oil and gas production facilities. He has been cross-examined in arbitration and has acted as an expert for disputed values of up to US$360 million.

Alan spent the first 20 years of his career as a design and project engineer for pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies. This involved designing chemical processes, specifying plant equipment and selecting materials for highly corrosive and toxic processes. He spent a further 10 years working on offshore oil and gas design projects, including being appointed responsibility for reviewing and changing design safety practices in the aftermath of the high-profile Piper Alpha disaster.

In recent years, Alan has been called upon to conduct various offshore incident investigations using root cause analysis methodology. His expertise ranges from critiquing of project design and execution to the identification of safety deficiencies and performance standard issues.

Alan is a fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, having previously served a chair of the Scottish branch and has also chaired the north Scotland branch of the Safety and Reliability Society. He has lectured on reliability analysis to the Sheffield University Process Safety and Loss Prevention master’s course and has delivered training courses regarding process hazard analysis (HAZOP and HAZID), process safety engineering, hazard awareness, risk assessment, root cause analysis, failure modes and effect analysis.
