Expertise
Simon Firth is a Chartered Geologist with almost 30 years of groundwater and contaminated land experience. He has acted as a technical expert regarding hydrogeology and risk assessment on numerous occasions.
Simon has been cross-examined in a vapour intrusion case alongside varied expert witness appointments, primarily involving land contamination. He has prepared expert reports and joint expert witness statements and has been engaged in joint expert witness meetings.
Simon specialises in water resources and contaminated land projects involving monitoring, assessment, design, modelling, and risk assessment. He has significant expertise in human health and environmental risk assessment, and in the application of contaminant fate and transport models to predict the extent of contamination in both soil and groundwater.
Background
Simon is a hydrogeologist by training and is an expert groundwater modeller. He is an experienced user of the groundwater model Modflow and associated contaminant transport package Mt3D, as well as experience with other groundwater models such as Aqua3D, and fracture transport models Fracman and Mafic. He has supported clients for matters across the UK, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Argentina, Thailand, Libya, Algeria, Iraq, Canada and the US.
Simon has a master’s degree in hydrogeology, is a member of The Geological Society and is a fully accredited risk assessor for the Society of Brownfield Risk Assessment (ASoBRA). He has also developed a number of bespoke risk assessment tools including stochastic models and conducts training courses on risk assessment for both industry and regulators around the world.
