Expertise
James (Jim) Armstrong is a Chartered Architect with over 30 years of experience. He has acted as a forensic architect and expert witness on more than 50 occasions.
Jim has been cross-examined and given oral expert evidence at hearings in the UK. He has delivered expert reports and analysis of evidence for disputed matters on projects with values in excess of £30 million. He is also engaged as an expert determiner and construction adjudicator.
Jim specialises in forensic investigations related to regulatory compliance, design obligations, design management, contract administration, specification and detailing, workmanship, construction defects, and remedial works. His broad dispute experience ranges from cladding and external facades, tanking failure, roof insulation and ventilation, and leakage to fire safety, latent defects, and quality.
Background
Jim was a principal in his own RIBA Chartered Practice for almost 25 years, also specialising in construction health and safety. In addition to his expert roles, he provides advisory services and undertakes tailored technical audits on construction and architectural projects, typically comprising a review of design information and verifying compliance with relevant building codes and standards, pre and post construction.
Jim is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Royal Institute of Architects Ireland, the Association for Project Management, and the Association for Project Safety. He is a practicing member of the Academy of Experts. He is a RIBA Part III Professional Practice External Assessor at the Queen’s University of Belfast, School of the Natural & Built Environment Architecture, and is widely engaged in committees and thought leaderships in matters of alternative dispute resolution.
