Helping equip an incoming MLRO with the clarity, credibility and judgement required for a successful SMCR regulatory interview
Brief
A global capital markets firm needed to prepare an incoming UK MLRO for and FCA regulatory interview as part of the SMCR application process.
The requirement went beyond rehearsing likely questions. The candidate needed to articulate accountability, judgement and leadership with clarity in the context of the firm’s own financial crime risks and control environment.
Regulatory interviews test more than technical knowledge. They probe how senior leaders understand their role, demonstrate independence, explain governance and oversight, and both initiate challenge as well as respond to it with credibility and composure.
The firm wanted a focused intervention that would both assess readiness and build confidence ahead of the interview, ensuring the candidate could present a strong, authentic and regulator-ready narrative.
What we did
HKA designed and delivered a targeted FCA interview readiness programme for the incoming MLRO.
We reviewed documentation relating to the candidate’s experience and competency for the MLRO role, together with firm specific materials relevant to the regulator’s likely lines of questioning, in order to shape a more tailored and realistic preparation process.
The programme combined three practical elements:
- A targeted coaching session on good practice for regulatory interviews.
- A mock interview with immediate oral feedback.
- Follow-up sessions to address any remaining questions and reinforce key messages.
The programme focused on the areas the FCA typically tests most closely: MLRO accountability, independence, governance, risk awareness, regulatory expectations, reporting lines, resourcing, and the candidate’s ability to discuss development areas with transparency and credibility.
Our approach was designed to move beyond generic interview practice by aligning the preparation to the firm’s own risk framework. Leveraging our own experience and insight of industry-specific frameworks and the candidate’s individual background, HKA helped turn technical experience into a sharper leadership narrative, one that was evidence-based, judgement-led and fit for regulatory scrutiny
Outcomes
The candidate was successfully and entered the role with a clearer, more confident articulation of the MLRO role and what effective accountability looks like in practice.
The process helped sharpen the candidate’s responses on independence, oversight, governance and regulatory judgement, while also giving the firm an independent view of readiness and the candidate’s key development as well as equipping them to answer difficult questions.
More broadly, the engagement gave the client a practical way to reduce the risk of avoidable regulatory missteps in a high-stakes interview. Rather than relying on generic preparation, the firm was able to equip its incoming MLRO with preparation grounded in its own business model, control environment and regulatory context.
- Tailored preparation aligned to the candidate’s background and the firm’s financial crime risk and control framework.
- Focused coaching and mock interview challenge designed around the issues the FCA is most likely to test.
- Clearer articulation of MLRO accountability, independence and judgement under scrutiny.
- Immediate feedback and follow-up support to reinforce strengths and address development areas quickly.
- A stronger readiness process to build the candidate’s confidence and help reduce the risk of delays, rejection or loss of regulatory confidence in the firm’s compliance leadership.
