Ensuring the successful integration with wider project functions

There is a body of research that claims there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and collaboration in groups. There is also evidence to show that a collaborative approach to project integration yields substantial benefits to project performance, compared to a traditional, process and system-driven approach. However, the literature has so far failed to link these relationships and investigate whether emotional intelligence could be a success factor for collaboration and the success of Project Controls (PC) integrating the wider project functions.

This article investigates the relationship between the emotional intelligence of PC professionals and collaboration between PC and wider project teams. It also identifies practical applications for current and future projects. Three possible theoretical concepts are used to explain this link; emotional expressiveness, leader-follower chemistry and group emotional intelligence. The conclusion is that emotional intelligence and the ability of PC professionals to collaborate and integrate with wider project functions are key to the success of a project.
