U.S. Department of Justice Report on False Claims Act Settlements and Judgments

In a press release dated January 16, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that False Claims Act (FCA) settlements for the government’s FY 2025 exceeded $6.8 billion. DOJ’s report indicated that a record-breaking 1,297 qui tam lawsuits were filed by whistleblowers. According to the report, the FY 2025 settlements and judgments bring the total amount of settlements and judgments since Congress took action to strengthen the civil FCA in 1986 to more than $85 billion. The report states that DOJ focused its efforts in 2025 toward “stopping rampant fraud…to protect taxpayer dollars and hold all fraudsters accountable.”

Breaking down the $6.8 billion in FY 2025 settlements and judgments, over $5.3 billion arose from lawsuits filed under the FCA qui tam provisions, and approximately $5.7 billion related to healthcare recovery. In addition to healthcare, other FCA recoveries involved military procurement fraud, pandemic fraud, and violations of cybersecurity requirements. With respect to procurement fraud, several of the largest settlements involved allegations of defective pricing, fraudulent claims in connection with General Services Administration task orders, and the supply of military parts that did not meet specifications.
