HKA was engaged by one of the world’s largest mining and commodities houses to conduct a comparative market analysis. This analysis was crucial for the client’s discussions with the government of a country in Europe regarding the environmental and financial obligations tied to their mining operations in the country. The client believed these obligations were disproportionately high compared to other jurisdictions, potentially impacting their operational costs and profitability. 

What we did

HKA collaborated closely with the client’s legal counsel to perform a detailed comparative analysis of mining regulations and associated environmental bonds and guarantees across various countries. The economics team conducted economic and market analysis, considering the environmental financial structures in the country and compared them with those in other mining jurisdictions using similar characteristics of the mine in question. The project required a multidisciplinary approach, combining expertise from different fields including mining, environmental, technical, and economics. 

Outcomes

HKA’s comprehensive analysis revealed that the environmental bonds required in the country were significantly higher than those in other jurisdictions with similar mining operations. This information was compiled into a detailed presentation pack, enabling the client’s head of mining operations to brief the CEO. The CEO used this data to engage with authorities, aiming to adjust the environmental bond requirements to be more in line with international standards. 

The analysis provided the client with a robust foundation for negotiations, highlighting the market differences and supporting their case for more equitable financial obligations. This project showcased HKA’s ability to integrate technical, economic, and advisory expertise to deliver valuable insights and support strategic negotiations.
