Brief

Decommissioning nuclear facilities presents a unique set of technical, environmental and regulatory challenges. One of the most complex and costly aspects is the management of spent reactor cores, which contain radioactive materials that remain hazardous for thousands to millions of years. Ensuring their safe containment is critical to protecting future generations and the environment.

A portfolio client, the current nuclear site operator, was exploring new approaches to spent reactor cores, and sought expert insight to improve long-term safety, reduce operational timescales, and achieve better value for money. HKA was engaged to assess the technical and engineering feasibility of alternative methods.

What we did

Recognising the complexity and long-term implications of nuclear decommissioning, HKA deployed specialist expertise in radiological protection and nuclear environmental safety, alongside expertise in long-term climate forecasting. This ensured that the proposed solutions would be resilient across a wide range of future environmental scenarios.

Outcomes

HKA’s experts delivered strategic recommendations that helped the client evaluate the suitability of their proposed approach, balancing safety, cost-effectiveness and regulatory compliance. HKA’s input supported confident decision-making in a high-complexity environment.
