Alleviating poverty

About the cause

The communities we live in are one of the most important parts of our day-to-day lives. Whether it’s a city metropolis or a rural village, we all have the power to make our local communities a better place. HKA helps to empower colleagues to make a difference in the places they work and live.

Here is a selection of causes we’ve supported that help local communities.

The Community Chest of Korea

The Community Chest of Korea is a local charity in Seoul that provides support to the underprivileged including the disabled, the elderly, and children.

During the Seoul ADR Festival 2024, HKA hosted a fundraising walk through the Seolleung and Jeongneung Royal Tombs located in the Gangnam district, followed by a traditional Korean breakfast.

For every person who joined the walk, HKA donated to the Community Chest of Korea, and each participant had a tree adopted in their name through Ecomatcher.

They have donated more than 50 million meals to those in need in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia regions and are addressing the root causes of hunger by partnering with organizations that further this cause.

What we did

In October 2024, five members of HKA’s Washington, DC team volunteered with The Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, DC.

Franco Benza, John McTyre, Joann Coleman, Milton Detty and Ryan Groves packed 340 boxes of food to be distributed to local seniors experiencing food insecurity and give back to their local community.

“I am heartened by the significant impact that CAFB creates for the local community and proud that HKA encourages us to be a part of that impact.” – John McTyre

London Legal Walk

The London Legal Support Trust supports the work of social welfare legal centres in London and the Home Counties. Funds raised are targeted to assist requests for help from the centres. This financial aid helps the legal centres overcome funding crises, develop new services, support appeals and improve their premises. HKA has participated in the London Legal Walk since 2019.

What we did

We’re proud of our team who participated in the 20th anniversary of the London Legal Walk, walking 10km to support over 100 free legal advice charities. Like so many other colleagues, they continue to personify our ESG strategy by supporting initiatives that provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions.

It was a great afternoon to join the legal community in raising a total of over £900,000 for free legal advice services in London and the South East, which continue to support the most vulnerable in our communities.

Dubai 7s for Good

Since its inception in 2021, the Dubai 7s for Good programme has supported the development of sports facilities at the school, establishing a rugby pitch and donating equipment along with delivering coaching for both adults and children. In addition to promoting sports development, the funds have been used to build better infrastructure for the school’s community, creating a safer and healthier environment for students and locals.

What we did

On Friday 6th September, we attended the annual Dubai 7s Long Lunch as part of the Dubai 7s for Good programme.

We are pleased to have help raise their highest ever total of AED 580K, which will go towards building community infrastructure at North Road Primary School, Uganda, where they have been working to improve the facilities for the last 3 years, using sport and rugby as a vehicle for change.

Funds raised from this year’s Long Lunch will address immediate community development needs, such as building a retaining wall to protect the rugby pitch from erosion and constructing a security fence to ensure the safety of children when playing sports on school grounds.

Refurbishments to the on-site living quarters will improve accommodations for boarding students, while new changing rooms will support the growing sports programmes at the school. Additionally, a netball court will be built, as the sport is particularly popular among the girls at North Road Primary.

Jude Wilson-Brown, Ben Highfield, Clare Lavin, Bill Haggart, Mark Keeton, Mark Winrow and Darren Mullins were in attendance.

Othandweni Family Care Centre

Othandweni, which means "Place of Love", is situated in Mofolo South, Soweto – a township of Johannesburg – and offers residential care for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected. The centre was established in 1984 and caters for 90 children from the ages of birth to 21 years who live in houses around the property. The centre also has limited space available for destitute mothers or pregnant women who are contemplating the futures of their unborn children.

What we did

HKA has adopted the Othandweni Family Care Centre as to support Centre as the needs of the home are massive and they do not receive as much funding as they once did. HKA colleagues visit the home to meet the staff and children to provide aid.

In the past, we have helped to upgrade the library and to clean up the play area, so the children have safer facilities to learn, play and grow. We have also organised a Christmas party for the children including a BBQ, donating toys, and hosting festive games to give the children a real experience of Christmas.

In February 2023, colleagues visited and received a tour of the centre and brought a donation of 32 kilograms of clothes, toiletries, diapers and washing powder, as well as a monetary donation to further support the centre.

What we did

Chris Vagg, Pass it on Clothing & Co founder: “We know the lessons this “hands on” experience leaves with the participants are long lasting and through connecting with them after the service, we hope they go on and implement their new found knowledge and can individually better support those in need.”

Our colleagues in Oceania participated in Pass it on Clothing & Co’s five-hour “Experience + Education” Program.

This involved sorting and packing bags of clothing for men and women. Taking donated items, the team sorted them into 6-8 pieces per bag to create one outfit and deliver it to those in need in the community.

Fields of Life

Fields of Life partners with communities in the world’s poorest regions to build hope and transform lives. The charity is a non-denominational Christian International Development organisation with twenty five years’ experience working in East Africa, working with partners to provide sustainable community development.

What we did

HKA was delighted to pledge its support and make a donation as part of a client team (Spartan Team – Allianz, Berwick Law, BLD law firm and Stephen Hodges) to co-fund a clean water well. The well is in Rembe, a very remote and impoverished area of Northern Uganda, supplying 41 households with clean and safe water in close proximity to their homes.

Kiden Italian, a resident of Rembe village, said: “We were fetching water from Gbongatulu borehole, around 2km from Rembe. It is crowded as it’s used by people from other villages. Owing to the distance, some people abandon their jerry cans on the road, hoping to return, but many suffer from fatigue, chest and neck pains. It would take around four hours to bring water back to Rembe.

“We are now very happy that water is nearby. The fatigue we suffered is no longer a concern – the water is plenty. Thank you for bringing the borehole near us. May God reward and bless you abundantly.”

Paul Mansell said: “Our HKA team has been working with our client Allianz Insurance, the legal teams of Berwick Law (UK) and BLD (Germany) and a technical expert, Stephen Hodges) for around 6 years.

“The team decided to leave a positive legacy from our time working together in the form of a permanent water facility for a village in Uganda, and we were delighted to see the difference it has made.”
