Dr Nabil Al Tawil

Principal

Nabil is a highly qualified and experienced construction professional with over 35 years of project management, claims and dispute experience. He is one of a small number of accredited Arabic-speaking dispute resolution professionals operating in the UAE and across the wider Middle East; and is a registered expert witness with the appeal court in Iraq.

Nabil’s experience covers all aspects of pre-contract and post-contract works including acting as project manager on a number of major construction projects. He is well versed in budget management, cost monitoring, value engineering and scheduling for all phases of engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC).

Nabil is familiar with numerous forms of contracts used by employers across the MENA region and in particular he specialises in FIDIC and NEC. He prepares and reviews extension of time claims, together with quantum claims for disruption, prolongations and acceleration. Nabil has regular involvement with contract administration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) roles across Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait and the UAE.

Nabil has been a senior representative to the Abu Dhabi Government Claims Committee for the last 4 years, significantly enriching his knowledge of the common causes and resolutions of disputed projects in the region. He is actively involved in arbitration and mediation and has repeatedly acted as sole arbitrator and chair of arbitration tribunal on a number of cases in Iraq, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Nabil has acted as an expert witness on 6 occasions and has been cross-examined on both litigation and arbitration.

In addition to his engineering degree, Nabil holds a PhD from Reading University and an MSc from Loughborough University in construction management. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building and Chartered Management Institute, a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Project Management Institute, a RICS accredited mediator, an accredited arbitrator by the Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Centre (ADCCAC) and the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), and an accredited expert in civil works by the Court of Appeal in Iraq.
