HKA drives industry engagement on Sydney Metro West

Sydney Metro is the largest urban rail project in Australian history, delivering a new generation, rapid transit rail system and transforming travel around the nation’s biggest city.

HKA has been working with Transport for NSW on the project since its inception in 2003, delivering more than 50 separate work orders.

The third stage of the project – Sydney Metro West – will most likely be the largest public transport project ever undertaken in Australia. This city-shaping project is proposed to deliver a new connection between the central business districts of Parramatta and Sydney, linking communities and businesses in the western suburbs, and comparable to the impact of building the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the 1930s.

Transport for NSW has engaged HKA to undertake the Industry Engagement and Market Sounding process for the Sydney Metro West project. This early engagement with local and international industry participants, as well as comparator metro projects and key stakeholders, will help shape its development and will include the metro product, alignment and potential station locations.

During 2017, the first stage of the industry engagement and market-led approach will help define the project to ensure the desired transport and land use outcomes are met. The second stage of industry engagement, in early 2018, will focus on how the project could be packaged, procured and delivered.

This innovative approach brings industry into the conversation to share ideas that will help shape Sydney Metro West, something Transport for NSW has been doing since 2011.

“Industry engagement has tested, refined, and optimised both the earlier stages of the project – Sydney Metro Northwest and Sydney Metro City and Southwest, by harnessing industry expertise and world best practice. We acknowledge the significant effort and contribution which industry is making to the development and delivery of Sydney Metro. In partnership with HKA, we are excited to engage across all industry sectors both locally and internationally, to ensure a market-led and innovative approach in the development of Sydney Metro West.” Brendon Baker, Project Development Director, Transport for NSW, Sydney Metro West

A step change to previous approaches in Australia, HKA has implemented a promotional campaign across seven regions, reaching a target audience in excess of 600,000 to raise global awareness for Sydney Metro West. Local and international private sector participants and industry peak bodies are being targeted for participation, in addition
to Government stakeholders with a direct interest in the project.

Furthermore, HKA is collaborating with its teams across North America, United Kingdom, Middle East and Asia to facilitate engagement on behalf of Transport for NSW, and provide comparator metro projects from each region to inform Sydney Metro West and benchmark global practice.

“This is a defining appointment for HKA and provides an opportunity for our resources to connect and collaborate at multiple levels across our global organisation. The project also provides our team with a rare and exciting opportunity to have significant input into how all aspects of the project will be defined and delivered, at the same time further establishing HKA as a leading commercial advisor to Government on mega infrastructure projects of global significance.” Dafydd Wyn Owen, Partner and Project Leader, Sydney Metro West
