Join this in-person breakfast event with expert speakers Martin Hicks and Andrew White of HKA, and guest speaker Rupert Coldwell of Vinson & Elkins.

Martin Hicks will run through the various delay analysis methodologies using driving as an analogy to make it relatable to everyday life. Andrew White will review the recent case of Thomas Barnes v Blackburn Borough Council, with Rupert Coldwell providing a legal perspective on the case.

SPEAKERS

Martin Hicks, Principal – HKA

Martin is an experienced construction planner and delay analyst with a BSc in Project Management (Construction).  He has over 21 years’ experience in the construction industry in construction management, planning, programming, and design management.   

Martin has been appointed as an independent delay expert and has given oral evidence under cross-examination on an International Arbitration, and in addition has led numerous expert teams engaged in analysing delays to major projects across the globe.  Martin has also acted as an expert witness on numerous adjudications and has assisted negotiations during mediations. 

Martin is well versed to analysing programmes and has a sound technical knowledge of construction and mechanical and electrical processes.  He is used to working with a large volume of data, which he is skilled at simplifying in order to understand and analyse the critical issues on a project.    

Andrew White, Partner – HKA
Andrew is a chartered construction manager with 40 years of extensive construction experience who is regularly appointed as an Expert or Expert Advisor on delay and construction project management matters in adjudication, arbitration and litigation and recognised by clients for his thoroughly researched, clearly reasoned, “common sense” based analyses. His experience has been acquired across a broad spectrum of building, power & utilities, industrial & manufacturing, transportation & infrastructure, oil & gas projects in both the UK and Middle East.

Andrew’s experience also includes over 25 years working for several major contractors on a variety of projects within the building and civil engineering sectors. He held various roles, from site engineer through to projects director, with responsibility for projects from potential development scheme through to tender enquiry and completion.

Rupert Coldwell, Senior Associate (International Construction Disputes team) – Vinson & Elkins

Rupert has extensive experience in handling major and highly technical construction, engineering and energy-related disputes for a range of stakeholders within the supply chain throughout Central America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australasia.

Experience Highlights

  • Acting on a number of ICC arbitrations in connection with the design and construction of a major maritime project in Central America
  • Conduct of ICC arbitral proceedings on behalf of an EPCM contractor arising out of a Middle Eastern world-class petrochemical complex, including issues relating to non-payment of invoices, delays, and the quality of engineering, procurement, and construction management services
  • Advising a U.S. engineering consultancy firm about disputes arising out of the design and construction of new rail infrastructure in the Middle East 
  • Representing an international contractor in LCIA  arbitration against a residential developer relating to disputes arising from a major multi-purpose development in St Petersburg, Russia
  • Acting for a major civil, structural and M&E designer in defending various claims in respect of its design services regarding the development of a power generation facility at the Mount Pleasant military complex located on the Falkland Islands (including defending injunction proceedings for access to a licensed project management software program)
