Michael Bodnar is a registered professional engineer with 25 years of experience. He has been retained as a technical expert on hundreds of fire and explosion investigations.

Michael has investigated around 2,000 fires and been instructed as an expert witness on approximately 200 occasions. He has participated as an expert in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) matters and has been qualified as an expert witness in the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta and the Court of Queen’s Bench of Saskatchewan.

Michael’s engineering experience spans the oil and gas and power industries and his service in the Canadian Army, which included advanced training in military ordnance and explosive ordnance disposal. For the past 16 years, he has provided fire and explosion investigation, fire protection engineering, fire risk assessment, and building and fire code consulting services.  In building design and construction, Michael’s work has included building and fire code consulting, plan review, fire protection system design, fire and life safety inspections and assessments, hazard identification and risk analysis, and the development of alternative solutions, including performance-based design. He has extensive fire, smoke, and explosion modelling experience, including from first principles and utilizing zone modelling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Michael has expertise in all manner of fire and explosion investigations in the industrial, commercial, residential, vehicle and equipment, marine, and wildland environments, including multiple large loss investigations ($100 million+). He has specialized experience in fire dynamics and fire spread, building and fire code issues, and litigation support.

Michael is recognized for his strong technical ability and science-supported opinions. He delivers clear explanations and communicates complex matters in an easy-to-understand manner, allowing his clients to make the most informed decision possible. Michael has supplemented his practical, technical, and educational background by volunteering in the codes and standards development process, provincially and nationally in Canada, and with the National Fire Protection Association.
